For the last six months or so, Motorola has been sitting on the sidelines letting Huawei/Honor and Xiaomi have all the fun with their latest mid-range devices. Moto unveiled its G5 series of handsets at MWC last year and the company was expected to unveil their successor at this year’s MWC. But that did not happen, though Moto did confirm that it will be unveiling its first phones of the year in April.
Now, the Lenovo-owned Moto has sent out an invite for a press event in Brazil on April 19. The company is expected to unveil its Moto G6 family of handsets at the event. Brazil is a key market for Motorola so its fitting that the company is holding an event in the country. The Moto G6 family will consist of three phones: Moto G6, G6 Play, and G6 Plus. The Moto G6 Play will be the cheapest of the bunch and feature a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 chipset, 4,000mAh battery, and a 5.7-inch 720p+ display. It will feature a 12MP shooter at its rear and a 5MP selfie camera. The middle-of-the-pack Moto G6 will feature a Snapdragon 625 chipset, a 5.7-inch FHD+ display, 3/4GB RAM, and a dual-camera setup at the rear. Lastly, the Moto G6 Plus will sport a Snapdragon 630 chipset, a 6.2-inch FHD+ display, 4/6GB RAM, a 12/5MP camera setup at the rear, and a 16MP selfie shooter. All three handsets will be running on Android Oreo out of the box and feature an 18:9 aspect ratio display. Motorola has been struggling against the onslaught from OEMs like Huawei and Xiaomi and a lot depends on its upcoming Moto G6 family. Motorola was doing well under Google’s leadership but after it was sold to Lenovo, it has struggled to stay relevant in the smartphone market. The blame for this lies with Lenovo which has continuously flip-flopped on its smartphone plans.
