LG’s flagship phones of the past were known for their bootloop issues. Frustrated owners of the handset ultimately teamed up to file a class action lawsuit against the company which has duly reached its settlement today. And the results are not going to surprise anybody: LG will be compensating all affected owners by either paying them $425 or by offering a $700 rebate towards a new LG device.
The original lawsuit against LG only included the G4 and V10. However, it was soon expanded to include the G5, V20, and Nexus 5X. LG itself had acknowledged the bootloop issue — at least on the G4 — and claimed it was a hardware fault. All major flagship LG devices affected by the bootloop issue would enter into a bootloop one fine day and stop working. The only way to fix them was to replace their motherboard which could be an expensive process if your phone is out of warranty. There’s a catch here though: if you were not a part of the original lawsuit, you are not going to get any compensation from LG here. And if you were, you should be contacted by the law firm representing you within the next few days. You will need to file a claim with LG before February 12th to be eligible for the compensation. There’s no need for you to return your broken phone to LG to claim the compensation. The compensation will be distributed by LG from March.
Our Take
LG’s compensation of $425 or a $700 rebate towards a new LG device is definitely on the generous side. Hopefully, this will help reduce the frustration and anger of existing LG customers who must have felt cheated when they first realized that the bootloop issue on their phone was due to a hardware fault from LG. The $700 rebate from LG is also a smart move as it would help boost the sales of its flagship handsets.
